art vs. craft

with plans to study batik in india next fall, i am interested in bridging the gap between creations considered handcrafts, and those considered art.  i would like to take crafts beyond their functional motivations into form-focused, aesthetic pieces with meaningful implications.

the below images mirror these intentions by archiving my knitting projects, which springboarded my interests in the textile art of batik.  i hope that the still-lives themselves provoke artistic insight, as my first step towards doing so in my fiber and textile studies.

i encourage the interactivity of this site in spreading ideas related to knitting and fiber arts.  feel free to leave comments, or share your own pieces in the feedback sections.  also!  thank you to everyone in the help me with my digital project group! for letting me know about the little red x’s!

  1. With clothes being mass produced now, the art of clothing has really begun to die. Most clothing, made for artistic purposes, is only seen on the runway in Paris. And that stuff is too expensive for anyone to enjoy. By bringing back handcrafted clothes and accessories, meaning is being put back into clothing.

  2. I really enjoyed looking at these pictures. It makes me want to have an small, if only existant, knowledge of art or at least the symbolism behind your choices of the locations and pieces… I realize that this reply comments more on the pictures themselves, but i still felt I should express my thought.
